2093238 9206223 PCTABS00011 A cermet material, a composite roll comprising a steel or iron based core and a hardface of the cermet material, and a method of forming a composite roll by plasma arc welding the cermet material onto the core are disclosed. The hardface comprises a dispersion of niobium carbide particles in a cobalt based matrix or a nickel based matrix having a carbon concentration in the matrix of less than 0.3 wt %. An important characteristic of the hardface is that it has a uniform dispersion of niobium carbide particles.
