A process for preparing a product gas mixture comprising CO and H2 from a light hydrocarbon and O2 mixture is disclosed. The process includes contacting a reactant gas mixture comprising a C1-C5 hydrocarbon and a source of molecular oxygen with a catalytically effective amount of a supported catalyst comprising nickel and rhodium. The catalyst and reactant gas mixture is maintained at catalytic partial oxidation promoting conditions of temperature and pressure during the contacting period, which is preferably 10 milliseconds or less. Certain preferred catalysts comprise an alloy of about 1-50 weight percent nickel and about 0.01-10 weight percent rhodium and optionally lanthanide elements, zirconium, cobalt, manganese and magnesium on a porous refractory support structure.

L'invention concerne un procédé de préparation d'un mélange de gaz de synthèse renfermant du CO et du H¿2?, à partir d'un hydrocarbure léger et d'un mélange d'O¿2?. Le procédé consiste à mettre en contact un mélange de gaz réactant renfermant un hydrocarbure C¿1?-C¿5? et une source d'oxygène moléculaire avec une quantité catalytiquement efficace d'un catalyseur supporté comprenant du nickel et du rhodium. Le mélange catalyseur et gaz réactant est maintenu à oxydation partielle catalytique à des conditions de température et de pression élevées au cours de la période de contact de 10 millisecondes ou moins de préférence. Certains catalyseurs préférés comprennent un alliage d'environ 1-50 % en poids de nickel et d'environ 0,01-10 % en poids de rhodium et éventuellement des éléments de lanthanides, du zirconium, du cobalt, du manganèse et du magnésium sur une structure support réfractaire poreuse.
