The present invention features methods for induction of angiogenesis by administration of nicotine or other nicotine receptor agonist. Induction of angiogenesis by the methods of the invention can be used in therapeutic angiogenesis in, for example, treatment of ischemic syndromes such as coronary or peripheral arterial disease. The Figure is a graph illustrating the effect of intramuscularly administered nicotine upon capillary density in an animal model of ischemia.
