Aliphatic nitrate esters having a sulfur or phosphorus atom .beta. or .gamma. to a nitrate group and their congeners having efficacy as neuroprotective agents are described. Preferred nitrate esters may be synthesized by nitration of a 3-bromo-1,2-propanediol, and subsequent reaction to yield the desired mono-, di- or tetra-nitrate ester.

On décrit des nitro-esters aliphatiques présentant un atome de soufre ou de phosphore beta ou gamma lié à un groupe nitrate et leurs congénères, efficaces comme agents neuroprotecteurs. Des nitro-esters préférés peuvent être synthétisés par nitration d'un 3-bromo-1,2-propanediol, la réaction suivante conduisant à l'obtention du mono-, di- ou tétra-nitro-ester désiré.
