The invention addresses a composition of matter comprising a cation [Ct]+ and an anion [A]-, the anion comprises a core Group-13 element bound to partially or completely fluorinated fluoroaryl ligands, at least one of the fluoroaryl ligands is substituted with a Group-15 element that has been rendered essentially inert for subsequent chemical reaction through its unbonded electron pair by substituting an electron-withdrawing group on it. [Ct]+ may be selected from anilinium and ammonium cations, trityl carbenium cations, Group-11 metal cations, silylium cations, the cations of the hydrated salts of Group-1 or -2 metals, and derivatives of the foregoing anilinium, ammonium, trityl carbenium, and silylium cations containing C1-C20 hydrocarbyl, hydrocarbylsilyl, or hydrocarbylamine substituents for one or more hydrogen atoms of said cations. The compositions can be used to activate olefin polymerization catalysts, and can be prepared to dissolve in aliphatic solvents. Syntheses and polymerization are illustrated.

L'invention concerne une composition comprenant un cation [Ct]?+¿ et un anion [A]?-¿, l'anion comprenant un élément central du groupe 13 lié à des ligands fluoroaryles partiellement ou complètement fluorés, l'un des ligands fluoroaryle, au moins, étant substitué par un élément du groupe 15 rendu essentiellement inerte vis-à-vis d'une réaction chimique subséquente par remplacement de sa paire électronique libre avec un groupe attracteur d'électrons. [Ct]?+¿ peut être choisi parmi des cations anilinium et ammonium, trityl carbénium, de métaux du groupe 11, silylium, de sels hydratés de métaux des groupes 1 et 2, et parmi des dérivés des cations précédents, à savoir anilinium, ammonium, trityl carbénium, et silylium contenant des substituants hydrocarbyle en C¿1?-C¿20?, hydrocarbylsilyle, ou hydrocarbylamine sur l'un ou sur plusieurs des atomes d'hydrogène de ces cations. Les compositions peuvent être utilisées afin d'activer des catalyseurs de polymérisation d'oléfine, et elles peuvent être préparées afin d'être solubles dans des solvants aliphatiques.
