Methods of reducing the concentration of nitrogen dioxide in an exhaust gas produced by the combustion of fuel, said method comprising passing said exhaust gas through an exhaust gas after-treatment device impregnated with a nitrogen dioxide destructive effective amount of a precious metal preferably from palladium in admixture with another metal, preferably copper, iron, or a rare earth metal, preferably cerium to produce a purified exhaust gas having a reduced concentration of nitrogen dioxide. The methods optionally include adding a cerium based fuel additive, preferably diesel, to the fuel. The methods provide improved exhaust quality index values, particularly of value in confined spaces such as underground mining, tunnels and construction.
