A nitrogen oxide sensor and a method of manufacturing the sensor are disclosed. The sensor has a gas detecting portion including sensitive material having electric property thereof subject to change in association with presence of nitrogen oxide in gas and a pair of electrodes electrically connected with the gas detecting portion. The gas detecting portion includes, as a main component thereof, metal oxide compound represented by a general formula: Bi2Sr2 (ca1 - x Yx) Cu2O8 + y (0.8~ x ~ 1; 0 ~ y ~ 1) and having the 2212 phase crystal structure and crystalline size greater than 100A.

Le détecteur comporte une zone de captage des gaz logeant une matière sensible dont les propriétés électriques sont sujettes à changement en présence d'oxydes d'azote dans le gaz, ainsi qu'une paire d'électrodes électriquement reliées à la zone de captage des gaz. Un des principaux composants de la zone de captage des gaz est un mélange d'oxydes métalliques représenté par la formule suivante : Bi2Sr2 (cal - x Yx) Cu208 + y (0,8 x 1;0 y 1) avec une cristallographie de phase 2212 et des dimensions supérieures à 100A.
