ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of a nitrogenous fertilizer, which process comprises treating a coal of low rank with a suit- able hydrotropic solvent to dissolve at least a substantial amount of the humus content of the coal, subjecting the thus formed solu- tion to oxidising conditions, adding a nitrogen-donating compound to the oxidised solution so as to form a gel, and drying the gel.
