A gearbox (28) for a drive line irrigation system (10) in which the input (58) and output shafts (36) of the gearbox (28) are sealed with a compressed and sintered silicon and carbide face seal (72). The face seal (72) is contained within the gearbox and compressed between a gearbox end cap (68) and a shaft bearing (64), obviating the need for external loading by bellows or similar spring elements.
