-11- Noble Metal Catalyzed Reactions Abstract A method is disclosed for improving the performance of noble metal catalysts such as platinum in catalyzed chemical reactions where the reduction of oxygen is a rate limiting step. The catalytic activity of the catalyst and thus, the rate of reaction is increased by increasing the electron density of state at the Fermi level of the catalyst. This can be accomplished, for example, by alloying the noble metal catalyst with materials which increase the electron density of state.
