A layered architecture for a network management system comprises physical building blocks (BBs) and service BBs. The purpose of a physical BB is to convert physical network information form the network resources and faults information into specific physical network data. The purpose of a service BB is to convert the physical network data from other physical BBs service related information and to present it to its clients using the same interface that the associated physical BB uses. A physical BB and a service BB form a family if they use same type of physical network data. All BBs in the network management system reuse parts of the software. Namely a BB has specific software parts, BB family software parts, and network management software parts that are common to all BB. Service BBs may interact to each-other in a server-client relationship.
