CASE 3050 NOISE SUPPRESSING CIRCUIT FOR USE WITH AN AVALANCHE PHOTODIODE Abstract of the Disclosure There is provided a noise suppression circuit that is used in conjunction with an avalanche photodiode operating near its breakdown voltage to detect low light levels. The noise suppression circuit significantly reduces the multiplication noise normally associated with high gain avalanche photodiodes by examining and modifying the gain probability distribution of the detected signal. The gain probability distribution is modified by replacing current pulses in the detected signal that exceed a predetermined threshold gain with a uniform pulse signal of its own predetermined gain. The noise suppression circuit increases the Figure of Merit (FOM) to about 75% where the FOM is defined as the ratio of actual signal to noise of the photodiode and wideband preamplifier to the ideal signal to noise of a perfect quantum counter.
