A non-circular endodontic instrument (110) is provided for reduced stress to the tooth, and to the cutting instrument during the removal of dentin from a root canal. The non- circular endodontic instrument (110) includes at least one area of non-contact (140), i.e., one portion of the instrument does not contact and does not cut the dentin material. The non-contact area (140) extends the length of the endodontic instrument (110), about a portion of the circumference of the instrument, and interrupts a generally circular cutting face (120) of the instrument. This non-contact area (140) reduces stress provides a place for debris to gather during cutting so as to not interfere with the cutting face (120), and serves to direct the debris out of the root canal. The endodontic instrument (110) can be D-shaped in cross-section. It could have circumferential opposing non-contact, areas and/or can be elliptical in cross-sectional shape.

L'invention concerne un instrument endodontique non circulaire (110) exerçant moins de contrainte sur la dent, et sur l'instrument de coupe pendant l'élimination de la dentine d'un canal radiculaire. L'instrument endodontique non circulaire (110) présente au moins une zone de non contact (140), c'est-à-dire une partie de l'instrument ne venant pas au contact de et ne coupant pas la matière de la dentine. La zone (140) de non contact prolonge l'instrument endodontique (110) autour d'une partie de la circonférence dudit instrument, et interrompt une face de coupe (120), d'une manière générale, circulaire de l'instrument. Cette zone de non contact (140) réduit la contrainte, procure de la place pour les débris afin de les rassembler pendant la coupe, de manière à ne pas gêner la face de coupe (120) et elle sert à orienter les débris hors du canal radiculaire. L'instrument endodontique (110) peut avoir la forme d'un D en coupe. Il pourrait avoir des zones circonférentielles opposées de non contact et/ou présenter une forme de coupe elliptique.
