A bilirubin monitor that utilizes two wavelengths of light radiation directed to an infants arterial system. The monitor includes a light detector that receives light preferably reflected or backscattered from that arterial system andsignal processing circuits compute a ratio based upon the peak to peak values of the ACcomponent of the signals from the light detector with respect to each of the wavelengths. One wavelength is absorbed by the bilirubin in the infant's blood while the other wavelength radiation is either not affected by the bilirubin concentration or is absorbed substantially less than the first wavelength.
