ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A substantially non-misting inking roll and a method of making the same are provided. The roll comprises a cylindrical support means and a microporous cylindrical member supported by the support means. The micro- porous cylindrical member has an outer ink-applying surface and a special ink formulation disposed therein. The ink formulation comprises a printing ink having a thickening substance in the form of a plastisol formed by mix- ing vinyl resin, dioctyl azelate and dioctyl phthalate dispersed therethrough. A solidified thermally responsive coating of some of the thickening substance appears on the microporous cylindrical member. Because the coating serving as an antomatic flow restrictor controlling the flow of the ink formulation from the ink-applying surface by reducing flow area of the passage in direct proportion to an increase in temperature, this substantially eliminating misting of the roll due to temperature. The roll is thus particularly adapted to be used at comparatively high rotational speeds and/or tempera- tures.
