A welding nose has a distal end and a root portion joined by a plurality of surface segments having a progressively increasing outside diameter for distributing welding loads in a radial direction and for forming a plurality of smooth surfaces joined at intersections to define preformed depressions for flow of metal grains from the base material of the welding nose for reducing formation of wings on the outermost diameter of the welding nose thereby to reduce sub- surface fracturing so as to maintain a desired mean diameter over extended periods of use.
