2084305 9217223 PCTABS00016 A single use syringe (20) in the form of a cylindrical barrel (21) with a port end (22) attached to a hypodermic needle (27). A plunger (30) and piston (31) in the barrel (21) transfer liquid into or from the syringe (20) through a port end (22). The plunger (30) includes a locking structure formed at a predetermined position. An insert (50) at a remote end of the barrel (21) includes at least one cantilevered, longitudinally extending resilient arm (53a) with a radially acting, inwardly extending follower (56) at a free end (42) thereof that rides over the plunger (30). When the plunger (30) moves to a locking position, the follower (56) engages the plunger (30) locking structure to block any further longitudinal motion of the plunger (30) and piston (31) preventing any subsequent use of the syringe (20).
