ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a non-volatile read/write memory device having a memory array whose contents can be updated in a ROM socket which only has provisions for read operations. The device is a pin-for- pin replacement for normal ROMs. The device has a controller means which is operable in window-open mode and window-closed mode. The controller means controls the memory array of the memory device. The controller means allows data to be written onto the memory array only when the controller means is in window-open mode. The controller means also comprises a code recognition means which compares signals received by the device to a pre- determined combination. The controller means changes from window-closed mode to window-open mode when the code recognition means recognizes signals received by the device as corresponding to the pre-determined combination.
