This invention relates generally to para-tertiary alkyl phenyl substituted pyrimidines and triazines and the use thereof to protect against degradation by environmental forces, inclusive of ultraviolet light, actinic radiation, oxidation, moisture, atmospheric pollutants and combinations thereof. The new class of para-tertiary alkyl phenyl substituted pyrimidines and triazines includes two tertiary alkylated phenyl groups, and a resorcinol or substituted resorcinol group attached to the triazine or pyrimidine ring. These materials may, under the appropriate circumstances, be bonded to formulations comprising coatings, polymers, resins, organic compounds and the like via reaction of the bondable functionality with the materials of the formulation. A method for stabilizing a material by incorporating such para-tertiary alkyl phenyl substituted pyrimidines and triazines is also disclosed.

L'invention concerne d'une manière générale des triazines et des pyrimidines substituées en <u>p</u>-<u>tert</u>-amylphénol et leur utilisation visant la protection contre la dégradation par des facteurs environnants tels que la lumière ultraviolette, la radiation actinique, l'oxydation, l'humidité, les polluants atmosphériques et leurs combinaisons. La nouvelle classe des triazines et des pyrimidines substituées en <u>p</u>-<u>tert</u>-amylphénol comprend deux groupes phényles tertiaires alkylés et résorcine ou un groupe résorcine substitué attaché au cycle triazine ou pyrimidine. Ces substances peuvent, dans des circonstances appropriées, être liées aux formulations comprenant des enrobages, des polymères, des résines, des composés organiques et similaires à travers une réaction entre une fonctionnalité pouvant être liée et les substances de la formulation. L'invention concerne aussi un nouveau procédé pour stabiliser une substance par l'incorporation de ces triazines et pyrimidines substituées en <u>p</u>-<u>tert</u>-amylphénol.
