-1- ABSTRACT Nonconsumable Electrode Starting System For Arc Welding The starting system includes a reversible motor drive for directing the nonconsumable electrode into the workpiece and for retracting the nonconsum- able electrode in response to a short circuit condition between the electrode and the workpiece. The starting system further includes a pilot arc power supply for initiating a pilot arc as soon as the electrode is retracted and a main arc power supply for upgrading the pilot arc in response to a predetermined arc voltage.
