An electrophoretic display has a substantially two-dimensional arrangement of microcapsules each having therein an electrophoretic composition of a dielectric fluid and a suspension of particles that visually contrast with the dielectric liquid and also exhibit surface charges: a pair of electrodes, at least one of which is visually transparent, disposed on and covering opposite sides of the microcapsule arrangement; and means for creating a potential difference between the two electrodes, the potential difference causing the particles to migrate toward one of the electrodes. The display may be powered by one or more piezoelectric elements, which are also suitable for powering other types of nonemissive displays.

Cette invention concerne un affichage électrophorétique qui consiste essentiellement en un système bidimensionnel de microcapsules. Chaque microcapsule contient une composition électrophorétique d'un fluide diélectrique, ainsi qu'une suspension de particules qui offrent un contraste visuel par rapport au liquide diélectrique, et qui possèdent en outre des charges de surface. Cet affichage comprend également deux électrodes dont une au moins est transparente, lesquelles sont disposées sur les côtés opposés du système de microcapsules et recouvrent ces derniers. Cet affichage comprend enfin un dispositif créant une différence de potentiel entre les deux électrodes, laquelle différence va faire migrer les particules vers l'une desdites électrodes. Cet affichage peut être alimenté par un ou plusieurs éléments piézo-électriques qui permettent également d'assurer l'alimentation d'autres types d'affichages non émissifs.
