Abstract of The Invention Nonpigmented aromatic alcohol-based wood stains suitable for use on unprimed hardwood surfaces are prepared from aniline dyestuffs and a solvent by the addition of specific cellulose ethers thereto. In a preferred embodi- ment the stains additionally contain diberzylidene sorbitol as a gellant. In further embodiments the solvent is benzyl alcohol or includes benzyl alcohol.
