A nonwoven which is liquid pervious in a selected zone or zones is obtained by modifying the hydrophobicity of a selected area or areas thereof by application of a hydrophobicity modifying agent. For example, a surfactant may be applied to a hydrophobic nonwoven or a water repellent agent may be applied to a hydrophilic nonwoven. The nonwoven may be used as a one-piece substrate for products such as disposable diapers which require water impervious leg gathers and a water pervious top or cover sheet, and avoids the need for forming joins or unions between water repellent and water pervious fabric pieces.
