ABSTRACT Novel carbapenems which have antibacterial activity can be represented by formula I Image wherein the moiety Image represents a 4,5 or 6-membered mono, di or tri-substituted ring in which Z may be a moiety such as oxygen, sulfur, sulfoxide or sulfone; R0 may be a moiety such as hydrogen, (C1-C2)alkyl, CHFCH3; and R1 may be a moiety such as (C1-C8)alkyl, (C2-C8)- alkenyl, (C3-C8)cycloalkyl or (CH2)n,R in which n' is an integer of from 1 to 6 and R may be a moiety such as CF3, C2F5, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, hydroxy, alkoxy, nitrile, azido, a quaternary ammonio group, amidino, formamidino or guanidino.
