7-Substituted oxa- or azasteroid compounds represented by the formula Image have an excellent aromatase-inhibiting action, and are useful for prophylaxis and treatment of diseases caused by estrogens, for example breast cancer, uterine cancer, prostatic hypertrophy, etc. These compounds are characterized in that a hetero atom is introduced into the ring D of the ste- roid, and the 7-position (substituent R1) of the steroid skeleton is substituted with -S-R2 (wherein R2 denotes a hydrogen atom; a lower alkyl group optionally substi- tuted with a hydroxyl, amino or lower alkoxycarbonyl group; a lower alkenyl group; an aralkyl group; an aryl group optionally substituted with halogen atom(s) or amino, di-(lower alkyl) amino, lower alkoxy or lower alkyl group(s); an acyl group; or a lower alkoxycarbonyl group), -S(O)m-R3 (wherein R3 denotes a lower alkyl group, and m denotes 1 or 2) or an aralkyl group.
