The invention relates to novel benzofuran derivatives of the general formula (I) or salts thereof (wherein Py is 2-, 3-, or 4-pyridyl; and R is substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic heterocyclic group). The invention also relates to inhibitors against steroid 17 .alpha. hydroxylase and/or C17-20 lyase or pharmaceutical compositions which contain the derivatives (I) or the salts.
