The invention relates to nucleic acids and to protein sequences derived from said nucleic acids which possess functions that are essential to the survival of Escherichia coli. The invention also relates to vectors and host cells that have been transformed with these vectors for expressing essential proteins of the type described above and to proteins produced with these vectors. Finally, the invention also relates to the use of the proteins produced with these vectors in screening methods for identifying antibacterial substances and to the antibacterial substances found with these proteins.
