A hydrocarbon oligomer and a process for its production is disclosed that is useful as a pour point depressant and as a combination pour point depressant and viscosity index improver for mineral oil or synthetic oil. The oligomer is also useful in modifying wax crystal formation at low temperature when added to distillate fuels. The oligomer is a near linear copolymer of a mixture of ethylene and C3-C28 1-alkenes, or only 1-alkenes, wherein a large proportion of the pendant alkyl groups of the recurring 1-alkene monomer units contain between 14 and 22 carbon atoms. The oligomer is produced by polymerization of mixed 1-alkenes with reduced chromium oxide catalyst on silica support.

Oligomère d'hydrocarbure et procédé de production de cet oligomère, servant d'améliorant du point d'écoulement et simultanément d'améliorant du point d'écoulement et de renforçateur de coefficient de viscosité pour huiles minérales et synthétiques. Ledit oligomère sert également à modifier la formation de cristaux cireux à basse température lorsqu'il est ajouté à des mazouts légers. Il s'agit d'un copolymère quasiment linéaire d'un mélange d'éthylène et d'alcènes-1 C¿3?-C¿28? ou uniquement d'alcènes-1, dans lesquels une grande proportion des groupes alkyle pendants des unités récurrentes du monomère d'alcène-1 comportent entre 14 et 22 atomes de carbone. Ledit oligomère est produit par polymérisation d'alcènes-1 mélangés, en présence d'un catalyseur d'oxyde de chrome réduit sur un substrat de silice.
