This invention relates to an initiator system for the polymerisation of isoolefins having 4 to 16 carbon atoms, optionally with monomers polymerisable with iso-olefins, the system consisting of or one or more aromatic or heteroaromatic,poly-cyclic hydrocarbons and an aged, organic solution of vanadium tetrachloride, wherein the concentration of the vanadium tetrachloride is 0.01 mmol to 500 mmol per litre of solvent and the molar ratio of aged vanadium tetrachlorideto polycyclic hydrocarbons is in the range from 100:1 to 1:100. It is possible by means of the initiator system according to the invention to produce polyisoolefins, in particular butyl rubbers, at relatively high temperatures with only a low gel content and of a sufficiently high molecular weight.
L'invention concerne un système d'amorce pour la polymérisation d'isooléfines renfermant de 4 à 16 atomes de carbone, facultativement avec certains monomères; le système est constitué d'un ou de plusieurs hydrocarbures aromatiques ou hétéroaromatiques, polycycliques, et d'une solution organique ancienne de tétrachlorure de vanadium, dont la concentration est de 0,01 à 500 mmole par litre de solvant, et le rapport molaire tétrachlorure de vanadium ancien/hydrocarbures polycycliques de 100/1 à 1/100. On peut, grâce à ce système d'amorce, obtenir des polyisooléfines, notamment des caoutchoucs butyle, à des températures relativement élevées, avec une faible teneur en gel et une masse molaire suffisamment élevée.
