Isolated polynucleotides encoding novel polypeptides which are capable of binding to native and methylated LDL (low density lipoprotein), the isolated polypeptides, called LBPs (LDL binding proteins), and biologically active fragments and analogs thereof, are described. Also described are methods for determining if an animal is at risk for atherosclerosis, methods for evaluating an agent for use in treating atherosclerosis, methods for treating atherosclerosis, and methods for treating a cell having an abnormality in structure or metabolism of LBP. Pharmaceutical compositions and vaccine compositions are also provided.

Cette invention concerne des polynucléotides isolés codant de nouveaux polypeptides qui sont susceptibles de se lier à des lipoprotéines basse densité (LDL low density lipoprotein) méthylées et natives, des polypeptides isolés appelés LBP (protéines de liaison aux LDL) et des analogues et des fragments biologiquement actifs de ces éléments. L'invention se rapporte également à des procédés permettant de déterminer si un animal présente des risques d'athérosclérose, à des procédés d'évaluation d'un agent utilisé pour traiter l'athérosclérose, à des procédés de traitement de l'athérosclérose et à des procédés de traitement d'une cellule présentant une anomalie de structure ou du métabolisme des LBP.
