It is intended to provide a microorganism which can produce a large amount of a carotenoid, mainly astaxanthin and a method for producing a carotenoid using the same. The microorganism with improved productivity of carotenoid obtained by a breeding of a carotenoid-producing bacterium belonging to the genus Paracoccus, which produces 720 mg or more of a carotenoid per 1 L of a medium, and the method for producing a carotenoid using the same are used.
