It is intended to provide a novel microorganism Enterobacter sp. B20 strain which produces (E)-4-(2-isocyanovinyl)phenyl .alpha.-rhamnopyranoside having a favorable effect of inhibiting melanogenesis and .alpha.-L-rhamnopyranoside produced thereby. This novel microorganism is a gram-negative bacillus isolated from soil and shows motility owing to polar flagellum. The .alpha.-L- rhamnopyranoside, which is produced by culturing the microorganism under aerobic conditions at a culture temperature of 10 to 37 ~C and at a medium pH of about 5 to 9 usually for about 1 to 7 days, is useful as a highly safe and stable whitening agent.

L'invention concerne une nouvelle souche de micro-organisme, l'Enterobacter sp. B20 qui produit de l'(E)-4-(2-isocyanovinyl)phényl .alpha.-rhamnopyranoside présentant un effet favorable inhibant la mélanogenèse et de l'.alpha.-L-rhamnopyranoside ainsi produit. Ledit nouveau micro-organisme est un bacille gram positif isolé du sol et présente une motilité due à la présence de flagelle polaire. L'.alpha.-L-rhamnopyranoside, produit par mise en culture du micro-organisme dans des conditions aérobies à une température de culture comprise entre 10 et 37 ·C et à un pH moyen compris entre environ 5 et 9 généralement pendant 1 à 7 jours, est utile en tant qu'agent de blanchiment extrêmement sûr et stable.
