The present invention relates to a novel cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) Brassica napus plant containing improved 'oxy' cytoplasm i.e. chloroplast from Brassica oleracea and recombinant mitochondria from Brassica oxyrrhina, a process for developing the said 'oxy' CMS Brassica napus plants by using hexaploid 'oxy' CMS Brassica plants, obtained through somatic hybridization, as the bridging material and back-crossing these for at least five generations to transfer the novel 'oxy' CMS character to Brassica napus plants and a method for producing the improved hexaploid male sterile 'oxy' CMS Brassica plants mediated through protoplast fusion and regeneration of the somatic hybrids and to the transfer of this improved 'oxy' cytoplasm to tetraploid Brassica napus (AACC) plants through conventional back-cross breeding for five generations.

La présente invention se rapporte à une nouvelle variété de Brassica napus à stérilité mâle cytoplasmique (CMS) contenant un cytoplasme 'oxy' amélioré, c'est à dire des chloroplastes issus de Brassica oleracera et des mitochondries de recombinaison issues de Brassica oxyrrhina. L'invention se rapporte également à un processus de développement desdites variétés deBrassica napus à CMS 'oxy' à l'aide de variétés hexaploïdes de Brassica à CMS 'oxy', obtenues par hybridation somatique et utilisées en tant que matière de pontage, que l'on soumet à un rétrocroisement sur au moins cinq générations de manière à transférer le nouveau caractère CMS 'oxy' aux variétés de Brassica napus. L'invention se rapporte également à un procédé de production des variétés hexaploïdes mâles stériles de Brassica à CMS 'oxy', mis en oeuvre grâce à la fusion de protoplastes et à la régénération d'hybrides somatiques, ainsi qu'au transfert de ce cytoplasme 'oxy' amélioré aux variétés tétraploïdes de Brassica napus (AACC) par la méthode classique des rétrocroisements sur cinq générations.
