The present invention provides two novel regulatory genes and encoded proteins which can be used to alter the biosynthesis and accumulation of condensed tannin levels in plants and plant tissues. The present invention further encompasses transgenic constructs containing the novel regulatory genes herein referred to as Ulimyc, Corniculmyc and Japmyc, for use in the transformation of plants and plant tissues and transgenic plants containing such constructs. The identification and characterization of these novel genes provide a mechanism for altering tannin production in plants and allows one to alter such levels to produce a variety of benefits in the field of agriculture, land reclamation animal farming and food technology in general.

L'invention concerne deux nouveaux gènes régulateurs et des protéines codées qu'on peut utiliser afin de modifier la biosynthèse et l'accumulation de niveaux de tanin condensé dans des plantes et dans des tissus de plantes. Elle concerne, de plus, des produits de recombinaison transgéniques contenant ces nouveaux gènes régulateurs désignés Ulimyc, Corniculmyc et Japmyc, pouvant être utilisés pour la transformation de plantes et de tissus de plantes, ainsi que de plantes transgéniques contenant ces produits de recombinaison. L'identification et la caractérisation de ces nouveaux gènes permet d'obtenir un mécanisme permettant de modifier la production de tanin dans des plantes et de rendre ces niveaux variables, de manière à produire une variété d'avantages dans le domaine de l'agriculture, de la remise en état des terres, de l'élevage animal et de la technologie alimentaire en général.
