An apparatus (2) for releasing an attached load, with the load being attached with a sling is described. Generally, the apparatus comprises a plate (4) having an underside face (4), and a latch member (16), operatively associated with the underside face, for latching and unlatching the sling from the load. The apparatus may contain an activating line (60) attached with the latch member, and activating member (64), operatively associated with the activating line, for activating the latch member. The apparatus may further comprise a spreader bar (40) that is selectively attached to the plate. In the preferred embodiment, the latch member comprises a first member (20) mounted on the plate with the member having an opening therein, a second member (22) mounted on the plate, with the member having an opening therein, and a third member (24) mounted on the plate, with the member having an opening therein. A load pin (30) is placed within the openings. A fulcrum point is provided so that the load pin may be pivoted for latching and unlatching.
