A novel compound is provided of the Formula I (see Formula I) in which Formula X is hydrogen or hydroxy; R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, stand for hydrogen or C1-C6 hydrocarbyl; or R1 and R2 taken together with the carbon atom which is starred in Formula I bearing the group X, can form a C3-C8 carbocyclic ring; Q is a single bond or a C1-C8 hydrocarbylene diradical, the expression hydrocarbyl radical or hydrocarbylene diradical indicating the residue after removal of 1 hydrogen atom or 2 hydrogen atoms from a straight saturated hydrocarbon, a branched saturated hydrocarbon or a cyclic saturated hydrocarbon, or from a straight, unsaturated hydrocarbon, a branched, unsaturated hydrocarbon or a cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon; m is 0, 1 or 2; R1, R2 and/or Q are unsubstituted or are substituted with at least one deuterium or fluorine atom; in addition, one of the m carbons designated by the "o" is unsubstituted or is substituted with at least one deuterium or fluorine atom, or with one or two C1-C2 alkyl groups; or derivatives of the compounds of Formula I in which at least one hydroxy group has been transformed into masked -O-acyl or -O-glycosyl groups, or a phosphate ester, the masked groups being hydrolysable in vivo. Such compounds provide for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of a number of disease states including hyperparathyroidism and autoimmune diseases (including diabetes mellitus), hypertension, acne, alopecia, skin ageing (including photoageing), imbalance in the immune system, inflammatory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma as well as diseases characterized by abnormal cell differentiation and/or cell proliferation.
