A nozzle capping mechanism comprises a pair of capping arms operatively associated with a powered roller of a printer. A cap is held between the capping arms and normally seats adjacent the printhead of the printer to prevent ink drying in the nozzles of the printhead. When the powered roller activates, the capping arm moves the cap away from the printhead. A space is made between the cap and the printhead that allows passage of a card being printed. The cap suitably consists of a pair of elastomeric seals located on each side of the printhead and a blotter that locates near the printhead.
