Abstract of the Disclosure A nuclear fuel rod assembly is provided comprising a tube having a portion thereof defining a fuel chamber for nuclear fuel pellets, end closure means defining one end wall of said chamber and a stop member defining the other end wall. The stop member is slidable within the tube and constructed to permit egress of gas from the chamber into a second portion of the tube. Compression spring means are located inwardly of the stop member and are adapted to abut a stack of fuel pellets within the chamber. A sleeve member is axially located in the tube and is slidable therein, a plurality of holes extending radially through the sleeve member between the inner and outer surfaces thereof. A ball is located in each said hole, and a tapered member extends axially into the sleeve from said stop member and tapers in a direction away from the spring. The tapered portion of the member contacts the balls within the holes formed through the sleeve, whereby movement of the tapered member under the influence of the compression spring forces the balls outwardly into wedged engagement with the inner surface of the tube. With the foregoing arrangement, a secure abutment means is provided for the compression spring without occupying the relatively large amount of space required by the conventional sleeve abutments of prior art devices.
