Two novel retinoic acid receptors are disclosed. These two receptors are members of the retinoic X receptor (RXR) family of nuclear receptors. These receptors exhibit a high degree of amino acid conservation with other vertebrate RXR's, but contain a conserved sequence which encodes an additional fourteen amino acid segment within their ligand binding domains. These RXR's do not bind 9-cis retinoic acid (RA) or all-trans RA with high affinity and are not activated by 9-cis RA. These RXR's are able to form dimers in a manner equivalent to that of other RXR's.
