Methods for purifying nucleic acids from biological fluids are disclosed as well as an apparatus for performing the methods. The methods and apparatus circumvent traditional centrifugation steps using a plurality of vacuum steps to separate and isolate nucleic acids. The vacuum processing and apparatus allow the direct collection of bound nucleic acids from to collection vessels avoiding further manipulation.
