This invention relates to the detection of nucleic acids, either DNA or RNA, based on their hybridization techniques. This invention also relates to a hydrophobic cloth useful as an adsorbent of nucleic acids for conducting hybridization reactions. This invention also relates to a cloth-based nucleic acid hybridization assay for obtaining significant and specific signals arising from the formation of the nucleic acid probe-target hybrids. This invention also relates to a cloth-based nucleic acid hybridization assay for the rapid detection of nucleic acids of any organism, such as eukaryotes, prokaryotes and viruses. This invention also relates to the method of lysis of cells derived from any of the above organisms, in a manner suitable for releasing the nucleic acids and simultaneousdenaturation and suitable for application in the cloth-based hybridization assay.
