Compounds of the formula (see formula I) are described wherein R1 and R2 are each independently of the other hydrogen or a protecting group, or R1 has those definitions and R2 is a radical forming a phosphorus-containing nucleotide bridge group; B is a purine or pyrimidine radical or an analogue thereof; and R3 is a radical of formula Ia, Ib or Ic (see formula I, Ia, Ib, Ic) wherein R4 is hydrogen, C1-C21alkyl, C2-C21alkenyl, C2-C21alkynyl or -C(=O)-alkyl; R5 is hydrogen, C1-Cl0alkyl, -CH2-O-R6 or a radical of formula Ib; R6 is hydrogen, C1-C22alkyl, C3-C21alkenyl, or partially or completely fluorine- substituted C1-C10alkyl or -[(CH2)2-O]m-R7; R7 is hydrogen or C1-C21alkyl; Z is -(CH2)p- or -(CH2-CH2-O)q-CH2CH2-, it being possible for Z in the case of -CH2- to be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more identical or different substituents selected from C1-C10alkyl, C5-C6cycloalkyl and unsubstituted or C1-C4alkyl- substituted phenyl; n is a number from 1 to 12; m is a number from 1 to 4; p is a number from 1 to 10; and q is a number from 1 to 4.
