ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to purified and isolated nucleotide sequences from the Y chromosome and autosomal chromosomes of bovines. Single strand DNA hybridization primers are provided which hybridize to the Y chromosome or autosomal sequences and which can be used to detect the presence of Y chromosome and autosomal DNA respectively. The nucleotide sequences may be used to determine the sex of bovines. Thus the invention also relates to methods of detecting the presence of Y chromosomal DNA and autosomal DNA respectively; and to methods of determining the sex of a bovine cell using the nucleotide sequences and hybridization primers of the invention.
