ABSTRACT Copolymers comprising up to 99% by weight of an alpha-aminomethylene phosphonate betaine of the formula: Image (I) R1 is hydrogen or methyl; Image a is 0, 1, 2, or 3, with the condition that when X is ?-O or ?-NH, that a be greater than 1: R2 and R3 are independently C1 - C6 alkyl, aryl, benzyl, or cyclohexyl; Y is hydrogen or hydroxyl; b is 0, 1, 2, or 3; Z is C1 - C6 alkyl, aryl, benzyl, or cyclohexyl, or Image ; and M is hydrogen, metallic cation, or ammonium ion and at least 1% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer. Homopolymers of the betaines are also disclosed. These compounds are useful as anti-redeposition sgents in detergent, chelating agents for scale inhibition, as crystal modifiers and in oil well drilling needs.
