ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Resilient O-ring seals for the annular spaces defined when a radi- ally inner surface of a cap is projected axially into the radially outer sur- face of a fuel tank filler neck having an axially outer annular lip. The radial width of the annular space is less than the radial dimension of the O-ring. Each O-ring includes an annular, radially outwardly facing groove defined by an axially inner lip, an axially outer lip, and a connecting web portion. The inner and outer lips both include axially inner and outer sur- faces. The web portion includes generally radially inwardly and outwardly facing surfaces. As the O-ring moves axially into the annular space, the axially inner surface of the inner lip contacts the neck surface and is urged axially outwardly in a wiping action causing bending moments to be established in the ring such that the O-ring radially inner surface is urged resiliently in a "rolling" motion. Such resilient rolling motion radially compressively seals the annular space. In one embodiment, the axially inner surface of the outer lip contacts the neck surface as the O-ring is projected axially fur- ther into the annular space. The axially outer lip of the annular ring there- by compressively seals the annular space axially. In other embodiments, the axially outer surface of the inner lip and the axially inner surface of the outer lip are provided with annular, axially extending compression rings or beads. Axially outward deflection of the inner lip brings the inner lip com- pression ring into contact with one of the walls defining the annular groove, thereby creating an additional seal. In two of these "compression ring" embodiments, the compression ring on the outer lip cooperates with the com- pression ring on the inner lip to create the additional seal. The compression ring on the outer lip does not contact the neck surface unless the first and second surfaces are misaligned.
