The oar with hinged blades of this invention has hinged blades that flutter between two limiting positions while rowing with the blades remaining in the water. When track mounted the pole of the said oar has a horizontal member fixed to it near the middle to keep the pole generally upright while the horizontal member is moved by the rower back and forth in a horizontal track attached to the side of a boat or raft. When pivotal mounted, the pole of the said oar is pivoted at the side of a boat or raft near the middle of the pole. In either case, the pole of the said oar is mounted to preferably move in a vertical plane while rowing in calm water. While rowing, the rower pulls the top of the pole towards his or her body followed by pushing the top of the pole away from his or her body to complete one cycle of rowing. The pole of the said oars of this invention preferably has a rectangular section to facilitate mounting hinges and brackets except a short portio at the top for grasping with one's hand.
