An innovative system and method apply appropriate colors to geometric figures and create an effect of lightly contoured surface areas used for drawing human interface elements on a CRT display. A processor with an attached storage and display process graphic objects with the aid of an object-oriented operating system by receiving a plurality of colors defining an object and calculating a shadow color based on the plurality of colors. Then a highlight color is calculated based on the plurality of colors, and finally the object is displayed on the display with a shadow color and a highlight color giving the object a three dimensional appearance.
