On a multi-node client server network, a client node obtains access to remote services by means of a communications directory service located in each node of the network. The communications directory service includes a tree structure to which existing directory services and other network services can be added. The tree structure has a plurality of nodes each of which includes specific methods that query and browse the associated directory service if such actions are supported by the underlying service. The communications directory service further includes shared libraries which store a service object associated with each service offered on the network. The service object, in turn, includes the service exchange address and communication link configuration information. A client desiring to access a remote service retrieves the appropriate service object from the communications directory service and uses the service object to set up the communications path.
Sur un réseau serveur clients à noeuds multiples, un noeud client permet d'accéder à des services éloignés au moyen d'un service de répertoire des communications se trouvant à chaque noeud du réseau. Le service de répertoire des communications comporte une structure d'arbre à laquelle on peut ajouter des services de répertoire existants et d'autres services de réseau. La structure d'arbre a une pluralité de noeuds, dont chacun comporte des procédés spécifiques pour questionner et parcourir le service de répertoire associé, lorsque de telles actions sont soutenues par le service sous-jacent. Le service de répertoire des communications comporte en outre des bibliothèques communes qui enregistrent un objet de service associé à chaque service offert sur le réseau. L'objet de service comporte, à son tour, l'information d'adresse de réseau de service et l'information de configuration des connexions des communications. Un client souhaitant accéder à un service éloigné va chercher l'objet de service approprié dans le service de répertoire des communications et utilise l'objet de service pour réaliser un trajet de communication.
