A method of absorbing oil or wax by contacting the oil or wax with a nonwoven or woven fabric prepared from a polyvinyl alcohol fiber. A method of recovering oil or wax contained in such a fabric using water and at a rate surprisingly faster than the rate of oil or wax recovery from cotton. A method of absorbing oil or wax from a mixture of oil or wax and sand by contacting the mixture with a fabric made from polyvinyl alcohol. Method of disposing of such fabrics which have been soiled or saturated with the oil or wax. The method is also applicable to other hydrocarbons such as aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon solvents.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'absorption d'huile ou de cire par mise en contact de l'huile ou de la cire avec un tissu tissé ou non tissé réalisé à partir d'une fibre d'alcool polyvinylique. L'invention concerne également un procédé de récupération de l'huile ou de la cire contenue dans le tissu précité à l'aide d'eau et à une vitesse étonnamment supérieure à la vitesse de récupération de l'huile ou de la cire contenue dans du coton. L'invention a aussi pour objet un procédé d'absorption d'huile ou de cire à partir d'un mélange d'huile ou de cire et de sable par mise en contact dudit mélange avec un tissu constitué d'alcool polyvinylique. L'invention porte enfin sur un procédé d'élimination des tissus précités souillés ou saturés par de l'huile ou de la cire, ainsi que sur un procédé pouvant être également appliqué à d'autres hydrocarbures, notamment aux solvants hydrocarbures aliphatiques ou aromatiques.
