OIL DETECTOR ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An oil in water detector arrangement wherein the response signal is substantially independent of oil type. Scattered light signals for an incident beam directed into a scatter cell are measured at two scatter angles (21, 22) and a corrected oil level value is calculated from the difference between the two signals. This obviates the need for recalibration of the arrangement for different oils.
